When the Ocean Thrives, the City Thrives

DUBAI REEF: Restoring Marine Life and Driving Sustainability

DUBAI REEF, one of the world’s largest purpose-built reef projects, is showing strong results in Dubai’s waters. Recent underwater footage from the proof-of-concept site reveals a thriving marine environment. Fish populations are rising, and new habitats now surround the reef modules.

Rising Biodiversity in Dubai’s Waters

Surveys confirm significant ecological progress. Researchers recorded higher fish numbers across 15 native species, including snappers, groupers, and barracuda. Early data indicates a potential ten percent increase in marine biodiversity. At the same time, fish biomass has grown eightfold. These results clearly demonstrate that the modules support healthier ecosystems and encourage marine life to return.

DUBAI REEF: Ambitious Plans for Habitat Restoration

The project’s first pillar is marine habitat restoration. By 2027, DUBAI REEF aims to fabricate and deploy 20,000 reef modules across 600 square kilometers of sea. These structures will provide ideal conditions for marine ecosystems to thrive. Since the launch in 2024, progress has been steady. So far, teams have completed 39 percent of the total modules, with 3,660 already placed underwater.

In addition to habitat restoration, DUBAI REEF also focuses on marine life rehabilitation and marine conservation research. Together, these three pillars create a holistic strategy for long-term sustainability and scientific progress.

Backed by Leadership and Partnerships

DUBAI REEF forms part of the Dubai Can sustainability initiative. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, launched the project to strengthen Dubai’s leadership in environmental innovation.

The initiative brings together public and private partners, including the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, DP World, Dubai Chambers, Nakheel, Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, and Emirates. These collaborations ensure strong support and shared expertise.

DUBAI REEF: A Vision for a Sustainable Future

Through this project, Dubai advances global sustainability goals. The reef contributes to climate action, marine biodiversity, and cross-sector partnerships. More than a local initiative, The Project reflects Dubai’s ambition to shape a sustainable future. By restoring habitats, rehabilitating species, and driving conservation research, the city sends a powerful signal: innovation can protect life below water and inspire global change.
