New “Tavern Tour with Beer Culture” in Munich
Munich and beer—a connection that is deeply rooted in the city’s history. In 2025, Munich Tourism is dedicating a new highlight to this heritage: the “Tavern Tour with Beer Culture.” On the new tour, which can be booked from February, culture lovers will make a detour to the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum. They will hear exciting stories about the art of brewing and stop at traditional inns for tastings.
The roots of Bavarian beer
Few people know that the roots of Bavarian beer lie in northern Germany. In the 16th century, Duke Wilhelm V had the world-famous Hofbräuhaus built. Then the then-popular “Ainpöckisch beer” could also be brewed in Munich. Today, the former bock beer is celebrated as a strong beer, especially between Carnival and Easter.
Thanks to the cozy get-togethers at traditional festivals, such as the famous satirical mockery of politicians on the Nockherberg, the months from February to April are the perfect time to visit the Bavarian capital.
The Starkbierfest is followed later in the year by the “little Wiesn” as the spring festival on the Theresienwiese is also affectionately known. The Auer Dult takes place three times a year at Mariahilfplatz in Au-Haidhausen. Dating back to 1310, it has an even longer tradition than the world-famous Oktoberfest.
Tradition meets innovation: Munich’s craft beer scene
There is a lively craft beer scene in Munich, where brewers experiment with ingredients such as herbs or grapes in the brewing kettle. Everything is usually brewed in accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516.
In an entertaining interview, the two master brewers, Susanne Weber and Kirsten Rhein talk about their passion for beer. She explained the differences between large and small breweries, and the development of beer culture.
New: Beer Culture Inn Tour in Munich
From mid-February 2025, the new guided tour from Munich Tourism will not only offer exciting insights. Here you find the city’s traditional beer and culture, but will also bring it to life for participants. Officially trained guides share fascinating facts about the history of Munich beer and its cultural significance.
During the three-and-a-half-hour tour in Munich’s old town, guests also visit the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum, which is located in one of Munich’s oldest town houses. However, the most authentic way to experience the fascination of Munich beer is in the city’s inns.
The tour therefore also includes a stop at three traditional inns, where guests can taste beer and enjoy hearty and sweet Bavarian delicacies. The tour is bookable from February onwards for 59 euros per person aged 16 and over.
